Navigating the Holidays: How to maintain Balance Over the holiday Season

The holiday season is a time for celebration, joy and togetherness, but it can also feel overwhelming. In between packed schedules, what seems like endless to-do lists, and holiday festivities, it's easy to let our “normal” routine slip through the cracks. We get it, life gets busy and finding time for yourself often feels like the first thing to go. However when the busyness is over and 2025 arrives, jumping back into your routine can almost feel impossible. That’s why it's important that we find balance now, so we put together our list of practical tips to keep in mind over the holidays. Which hopefully eases some of that stress and helps you navigate through the end of the year.

  1. Practice Prioritization
    • We know that obligations come with the holiday season, but it is important to set time aside for you. Plan ahead your schedule, prioritize what’s important to you and what you need to do to feel accomplished this month. Whether that’s sticking to your routine workouts, making time for rest or continuing to eat healthy. Create a list of tasks and prioritize them by importance to avoid feeling overwhelmed by everything on your plate. By protecting your time and energy, you will get the best of both worlds: enjoying the season while also taking care of you.
      • One thing I like to do is put all of my important dates and events in my monthly calendar. Then each week, I will thoughtfully plan my week, by prioritizing what I need to get done, when I can squeeze my workout in, and meal plan for the week! This helps me stay organize and gets me through my week with minimal stress.
  2. Get Rid of The All or Nothing Mindset
    • I think a lot of people understand that it is easy to fall into the mindset that one indulgent day or a few missed workouts means the whole month is a wash. Having this mindset will only add to pressure and guilt. Focus on practicing mindfulness and moderation. Allow yourself to indulge guilt-free while also making choices that take care of your body and mind. Remember, balance is key, and small, consistent efforts throughout the season can make a big difference in how you feel, both physically and mentally.
  3. Stay Active
    • You don’t have to stick to a perfect routine but staying active can make a big difference. That can be showing up to your regular workouts, hitting your step goals or simply trying to sit less and move more. Staying consistent with physical activity can help you feel less stress and more energized. Even 30 minutes of your day can do wonders for your mind and body. Even trying to spend 15 minutes outside for some fresh air can help clear the mind. Set goals for yourself early and set that boundary for yourself!
  4. Stay Hydrated
    • Hydration is something that is overlooked and easily forgotten about. With all the holiday meals, treats and drinks, staying hydrated slips through the cracks. Maintaining hydration will help with energy levels, digestion and keeps your body functioning at its best. Make it a goal to always carry a water bottle on you, and try to drink a glass of water with every meal!
  5. Be Consistent
    • Staying in a perfect routine is not going to be easy, things pop up at the last minute, there’s always that last minute errand you forgot about or life simply gets too busy. It’s not about being perfect, just consistent. This could be making sure you start your day with a healthy breakfast, hitting your protein goal or ending the day with stretching. Consistency is about maintaining some structure so you don’t lose sight of your goals. This will help you feel more balanced and get you ready for the new year!
  6. Workout with Family or Friends
    • Family or friends coming to town? Bring them to the gym, the more the merrier! Plus, working out with your loved ones can help build memories and make the workout more fun. It can be a fun way to stay motivated and make fitness not feel like a chore. This could be one of our group classes or even taking your family on a walk to take a look at Christmas lights. It is a great way to prioritize your health while doing it with the people who matter most in your life.
  7. Aim for 7-8 Hours of Sleep
    • It’s easy to sacrifice sleep to squeeze everything in, but sticking to 7-8 hours of rest is more important than ever. Sleep not only helps your body recover from the stress of the day but also strengthens your immune system. A well-rested mind can better handle the chaos of the season, keeping you energized and ready to enjoy the festivities.
  8. Enjoy yourself!
    • At the end of the day, holidays are meant to be enjoyed. Don’t let the idea of being perfect and sticking to your routine take away from the holiday joy. Celebrate with your loved ones, make memories, and treat yourself without feeling guilt. Maintaining balance also means making room for your happiness. Having this mindset will only lead to bigger and better goals in the new year!

It’s easy to forget about taking care of yourself. However, maintaining balance is key to truly enjoying this special time of year. By prioritizing sleep, staying active, managing stress, and making mindful choices, you can navigate the holidays feeling healthier, happier, and more energized. Remember, the holidays are about connection, joy, and making memories, not about perfection. With a little balance and self-care, you can enjoy the festivities while also staying true to your well-being goals.
